In coastal settings, salt accumulation on outdoor units accelerates corrosion and restricts airflow, while humidity forces components to work harder to extract heat. Schmid notes that these external pressures frequently mask simpler failures, such as clogged air filters that starve the system of necessary circulation.

Beyond external buildup, internal mechanical issues like refrigerant leaks and thermostat miscalibration remain primary culprits. Low refrigerant levels prevent effective heat exchange, leading to extended run times and uneven cooling across the home. When ductwork leaks or blockages are added to this mix, the system’s efficiency drops significantly.
