Universal Music Names Jamie Krents CEO of Global Catalog Division

Universal Music Group (UMG) has appointed Jamie Krents as the new chief executive of its catalog division, Universal Music Enterprises (UMe), as part of a leadership transition announced Tuesday. Krents, who currently leads UMG’s Verve Label Group, succeeds UMe founder Bruce Resnikoff, who will transition to the role of chairman after more than four decades with the conglomerate.

The dual appointment places Jamie Krents at the helm of UMG's extensive catalog operations while he maintains his existing leadership role at Verve Label Group. In his expanded capacity, Krents is tasked with accelerating artist-driven campaigns and finding new ways to amplify the company’s historic recordings. The move signals a consolidation of leadership as Universal Music Group seeks to maximize the value of its legacy assets in an increasingly competitive streaming and licensing landscape.

Resnikoff’s New Strategic Focus

As chairman, Bruce Resnikoff will shift his focus toward high-level strategic growth, including estate management and the acquisition of name and likeness rights. Resnikoff is widely credited with modernizing the catalog business; he founded UMe in 1998 following the merger of Universal and PolyGram. His framework for managing legacy music has since become a standard across the global entertainment industry.

According to the company, Resnikoff’s new mandate involves securing a broader range of intellectual property, including audiovisual rights. This evolution reflects a broader industry trend where major labels are moving beyond simple distribution to become full-scale managers of artist legacies. By retaining Resnikoff's expertise while promoting Krents, UMG aims to balance long-term asset acquisition with aggressive, modern marketing strategies for its most iconic music.
