The collaboration offers free access to over a dozen channels, including ESPN, Fox Sports 1, and BBC News. This initiative leverages the Viasat Live TV and Thales 360 web applications, routing high-speed data through SpaceX’s satellite network to deliver broadcast content directly to passenger displays. The rollout serves as a demonstration of the airline’s broader push to transition seatback hardware from static, on-demand libraries to dynamic, streaming-capable interfaces.
United’s Chief Commercial Officer Andrew Nocella noted that the move reflects a long-term strategy to move beyond pre-loaded content. The airline currently maintains over 160,000 seatback screens and intends to double that inventory through new aircraft deliveries and fleet retrofits. With Starlink connectivity now active on more than 400 mainline and regional aircraft, the carrier expects to complete the outfitting of its entire fleet by the end of 2027.
