CPKC Shatters Grain Shipping Record Amid Bumper Harvest Backlog

A massive inventory surplus from the 2025 harvest has pushed Canadian Pacific Kansas City to a new monthly shipping record. The railroad moved 2.8 million metric tons of grain and grain products in June, eclipsing the previous high-water mark set during the same period four years ago.

CPKC Shatters Grain Shipping Record Amid Bumper Harvest Backlog

The surge in volume reflects a broader logistical push across North American rail networks. CPKC’s performance in June capped a record-breaking second quarter, with the company hitting new highs for total tonnage and carloads throughout April, May, and June. The company’s American network also saw its strongest June output since 2022.

This trend extends beyond CPKC. Canadian National Railway recently reported moving 2.67 million tons of grain last month, its best June performance since 2020. Data from Statistics Canada confirms that bulging inventories are driving this activity; total stocks of principal field crops in Western Canada have climbed 15.4% over the last year, currently sitting 19.3% above the five-year average.
