MacKenzie Scott Awards $20 Million to Active Minds for Youth Advocacy

Philanthropist MacKenzie Scott has awarded a $20 million unrestricted gift to Active Minds, the largest single donation in the organization's two-decade history. This capital injection follows a $4 million contribution in 2021, cementing the nonprofit’s role as a primary driver in national youth mental health reform and peer-led advocacy.

The organization, founded by Alison Malmon in 2001 after the death of her brother, plans to utilize the funds to scale its national infrastructure. Strategy sessions involving the board and student leaders have prioritized the expansion of the Active Minds Mental Health Advocacy Academy and the Mental Health Advocacy Institute. These initiatives aim to equip high school and college students with the organizing skills necessary to force systemic changes within their local educational communities.

Since its inception, the group has reached more than 4.5 million young people through peer-based programs. Malmon described the donation as a defining moment that enables the group to pursue long-envisioned, bold investments in youth-led solutions. Beyond leadership training, the funding supports a broader effort to increase mental health literacy and strengthen peer support networks across American campuses, addressing an urgent, sustained demand for accessible mental health resources.
