OrthoArizona Surgeon Completes Arizona's First AR Shoulder Replacement

In a milestone for regional orthopedic surgery, Dr. Shelden Martin has performed Arizona’s first shoulder replacement procedure assisted by augmented reality. By utilizing the ARVIS system, the surgeon achieved millimeter-level accuracy directly on the patient’s anatomy, signaling a departure from traditional 3D-printed guides toward real-time, hands-free surgical navigation.

Operating in Scottsdale, Dr. Martin utilized the Enovis-developed ARVIS eyepiece, which provides visual guidance through voice and gaze control. This technology allows surgeons to place guide wires with high precision, removing the need for the patient-specific 3D-printed tools that have served as the industry standard for over a decade. The procedure was performed on a patient suffering from degenerative arthritis and rotator cuff pathology.

Dr. Martin, who has spent years refining the transition from first-generation planning to this second-generation AR interface, suggests the shift will streamline preoperative workflows while enhancing implant stability. OrthoArizona CEO Dr. Rajan Bhatt noted that the integration of this system is part of a broader push to standardize high-precision care across the practice’s 30 metropolitan Phoenix locations. As the technology matures, the team intends to expand its use to a wider range of joint replacement candidates, aiming to improve long-term survivorship and functional outcomes for patients.
