NueCell Bio Launches in San Diego to Bridge Cell Therapy Development Gap

San Diego’s biotechnology landscape has a new entrant focused on the difficult transition between laboratory discovery and clinical-grade manufacturing. The company operates at the intersection of complex science and commercial viability, supporting diverse platforms including CAR-T, stem cells, and gene-edited therapies. By offering customizable engineering and GMP-ready manufacturing processes, NueCell Bio intends to address the inefficiencies that often stall promising treatments. CEO Michael Wourms noted that the industry currently suffers not from a lack of breakthroughs, but from the difficulty of scaling them for patient delivery.

Dr. Uma Lakshmipathy, co-founder and Chief Science Officer, emphasized that while cell therapies have proven efficacy, their production remains costly and slow due to unique biological requirements. The company’s strategy relies on a modular technology stack to navigate these specific development risks. Scientific Advisory Board member Dr. Bruce Levine highlighted that this shift is critical for expanding cell therapy applications beyond oncology and into broader medical indications, including rare diseases and tissue regeneration.
