While coastal geothermal remains geographically restricted, proponents argue that moving energy production offshore bypasses the land-use conflicts and 'not-in-my-backyard' opposition that frequently stall onshore renewable projects.
The broader geothermal sector is currently seeing a surge of interest as the artificial intelligence boom drives a massive increase in data center energy requirements. The Rhodium Group estimates that if scaled rapidly, geothermal could satisfy up to 64 percent of the expected growth in data center power demand by the early 2030s. Simultaneously, the U.S. Department of Energy is banking on 'enhanced' geothermal drilling—which creates artificial heat sources—to power 65 million homes by midcentury. Despite higher costs compared to onshore sites, these marine-based and deep-drilling technologies are gaining traction among both federal policymakers and private investors looking for reliable, domestic energy alternatives.
