The tax hike marks the 32nd consecutive annual increase as local school districts, municipalities, and park boards continue to demand higher funding. Homeowners are shouldering 80% of the new costs, a trend driven by rising residential property values that have significantly outpaced commercial real estate since the pandemic. Over the last three decades, total property taxes in the county have ballooned by 184%, dwarfing the 91% growth in the cost of local goods and services.
Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas attributed the disproportionate impact on residents to a combination of unchecked government spending and low turnout in off-year elections, where tax-hike referendums often pass with minimal participation. In the north and northwest suburbs, where reassessments recently spiked home values, the median homeowner tax bill climbed 6.7%, while business bills saw a negligible 0.1% rise. Pappas urged local officials to curb spending and encouraged residents to engage more actively at the ballot box to check the trajectory of these recurring tax burdens.
