The company plans to invest in the expansion of Abu Dhabi’s Habshan-Fujairah pipeline, which currently handles 1.8 million barrels per day. With plans to double this capacity by next year, the project offers a critical exit point for Gulf oil directly into the Gulf of Oman. Simultaneously, TotalEnergies is pursuing a $15 billion pipeline project to transport Iraqi crude through Syria to the Mediterranean, aiming to reduce Baghdad's reliance on southern Persian Gulf terminals.
Pouyanné emphasized that the firm’s status as a leading trader of Iraqi and Qatari oil necessitates direct equity stakes in these logistical alternatives. While the Iraq-Syria project faces a four-year development timeline, the accelerated push reflects the broader industry response to the disruption of global supply chains. With roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil previously reliant on the Hormuz passage, these investments mark a significant shift in infrastructure strategy for major energy players.
