Google Backs Swedish Green Steel Startup Through Attribute Credits

Google has finalized a deal with Swedish producer Stegra to purchase environmental attribute certificates tied to near-zero emission steel. By decoupling these green credentials from the physical product, the search giant aims to offset emissions from its global datacenter construction projects while providing early-stage capital for industrial decarbonization.

The agreement covers an initial volume of 91,000 tonnes of steel, with both parties eyeing expanded procurement as Stegra ramps up its Boden-based operations. Utilizing a "book and claim" mechanism, Google can address its carbon footprint even when the physical delivery of sustainably produced steel is logistically unfeasible. This approach allows Stegra to monetize the environmental benefits of its green hydrogen-powered production process, which currently includes a higher share of non-prime steel typical of new facility launches.

Adam Elman, Google’s Director of Sustainability for EMEA, described the certificates as a vital lever for decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors. For Stegra, the partnership provides essential cash flow during its formative years. CEO Henrik Henriksson noted that the collaboration serves as a market-moving signal, helping to bridge the gap between limited early-volume production and the broader demand for sustainable industrial materials.
