Onkos Surgical Extends NanoCept Antibacterial Tech to Femoral Implants

Patients undergoing complex total femoral replacement now have access to antibacterial protection, as Onkos Surgical expands its NanoCept technology to the ELEOS system. The company aims to mitigate risks for immunocompromised individuals by applying its specialized coating to one of the most demanding procedures in orthopaedic oncology.

Since the initial launch in December 2024, NanoCept has been utilized in over 500 hip and knee reconstruction cases. The latest expansion introduces the ELEOS Total Femoral Adapter, the first component manufactured at the company's new Innovation Center in Bridgewater, New Jersey. This facility serves as the primary hub for the company’s efforts to integrate antibacterial coatings across its broader implant portfolio.

Julia Visgauss, M.D., Chief of the Orthopaedic Oncology Division at Duke Health, noted that total femur procedures carry significant risks for vulnerable patients. By potentially reducing bacterial presence at the implant site, the technology aims to improve recovery outcomes. While preclinical testing demonstrated a 99.999% bacterial kill rate, the company maintains that the coating is not intended to treat existing infections or serve as a guaranteed preventative measure, as clinical impacts in humans remain under study. Onkos Surgical plans to roll out the coating to additional ELEOS products in the coming months.
