Adyen Stock Plummets as Growth Strategy Shifts

A sharp 11% decline in Adyen shares on Wednesday signaled investor anxiety after the Dutch payments firm abandoned its midterm profitability target. By prioritizing aggressive hiring and product development over immediate margins, the company is betting that long-term expansion outweighs the short-term pressure of a cooling stock price.

Adyen Stock Plummets as Growth Strategy Shifts

The company previously aimed for an earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization margin exceeding 55% by 2028. By removing this benchmark, Adyen gains the flexibility to scale its platform and team, though the market reaction suggests a lack of appetite for such pivots. Shares have now fallen 39% since the start of the year, reflecting deep skepticism regarding the shift in capital allocation.

Despite the market's negative reception, the firm’s underlying performance remains robust. Adyen reported third-quarter net revenue of 738.1 million euros, or $821.1 million, marking a 23% increase. Analysts at J.P. Morgan noted that while these results exceeded expectations, the abandonment of the margin goal creates a difficult narrative for shareholders. Looking ahead, the company projects net revenue growth between 21% and 23% for the full year, with an Ebitda margin of 50%.
