The broader market followed the tech selloff, with the Nasdaq Composite sliding 1.38% to 26,184.72. The S&P 500 dipped 0.30% to 7,720.39, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average retreated 0.25% to 52,342.56. Alphabet’s struggle highlights the tension between AI development and financial performance. While operating income grew, the shift toward AI-integrated search—a less lucrative model than traditional results—weighed heavily on the company's bottom line. Even Microsoft, a primary driver of the sector's expansion, saw its stock slip 0.2% to $530.14 despite beating quarterly earnings forecasts.
Industrial bellwethers are also feeling the heat. Caterpillar shares dropped 9.3% to $647.39 after third-quarter sales missed analyst targets. Although the machinery giant maintains a massive backlog of power generator orders for data centers extending through 2030, the market’s reaction suggests that long-term promises no longer outweigh current earnings misses in a cooling economic climate.
