Tinnitus Quest Expands Research Funding to Target Phantom Sounds

A $230,000 University of Oxford study investigating non-invasive transcranial ultrasound stimulation serves as the foundation for a new global funding initiative. Tinnitus Quest is now seeking innovative, high-risk proposals to address a condition that affects hundreds of millions but remains largely underserved by current medical treatments.

Led by Professor Robin Cleveland at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering, the Oxford project explores whether ultrasound can modulate specific neural circuits to quiet tinnitus. This approach aims to provide a safer, scalable alternative to existing invasive neurosurgery methods. Building on these initial findings, the organization is launching a fresh round of grants, including a specific focus on hyperacusis, while encouraging the repurposing of existing drugs and devices to accelerate the path to clinical application.

The Barbra Streisand Foundation, which contributed $10,000 to the cause last year, continues to support the mission to bring relief to those suffering from chronic sleep disturbance and anxiety caused by the condition. To further drive collaboration, the group scheduled its second Tinnitus Hackathon for October 27–29 in Dallas, Texas. This gathering of researchers and patient advocates aims to draft actionable development plans for the next three years.
