Trump Shifts Focus to Ukraine After Iran Framework Agreement

With the Iran deal now firmly in the rearview mirror, Donald Trump signaled a pivot toward the war in Ukraine during the G7 summit in France. Following a meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the former president suggested he is ready to prioritize the conflict, potentially re-evaluating sanctions on Russian oil exports.

Trump Shifts Focus to Ukraine After Iran Framework Agreement

Zelenskyy reported a newfound unanimity among G7 leaders, noting that partners who previously hesitated now acknowledge Russia's refusal to cease hostilities. During their discussions, the Ukrainian president pushed for licenses to domestically produce Patriot air defense missiles, receiving what he characterized as a positive response from Trump. The urgency of the situation was underscored when Zelenskyy presented G7 leaders with images of a recent strike on the UNESCO-protected Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra Cathedral, a visual appeal intended to sharpen the focus on Russia's targeting of civilian infrastructure.

While diplomatic momentum shifts, the battlefield remains locked in a grueling war of attrition with no clear breakthrough for either side. Ukraine continues to pressure Russian logistics through long-range drone strikes on refineries, including a facility near Moscow. Simultaneously, the diplomatic landscape is evolving elsewhere; Ukraine officially launched accession negotiations with the European Union on June 15. The United Kingdom reinforced this pressure by seizing the Cameroon-flagged tanker Smyrtos, marking the first time British forces have detained a vessel from Russia’s shadow fleet. Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the cathedral attack, linking the incident directly to new British sanctions aimed at crippling the Russian war economy.
